There are mornings that remind you why you fell in love with this work. A quiet Richmond neighborhood just waking up, hydrangeas heavy with color lining the yard, and a brand new baby who is loved beyond measure. This Near West End summer newborn session in Richmond, Virginia was one of those mornings.
We started early, outside before 9:30, to get ahead of the summer heat and to catch that soft, golden light that only lasts so long on a Virginia morning in June. And honestly, it was worth every early alarm. The light filtering through the trees and bouncing off those gorgeous blooms gave us the most dreamy, romantic backdrop I could ask for.

There is something about photographing a newborn session outdoors that feels creatively rewarding. The environment is romantic. The colors are richer. There’s a beautiful balance between how vast everything is and how impossibly tiny this new little person is in the middle of it all.
Mom wore a flowing, white dress from my client wardrobe that caught the breeze in the most effortless way. I always tell my families not to stress about what to wear. That’s what I’m here for! When the wardrobe, the setting, and the light all work together, the images have a timeless quality where you can’t quite place the year. You just know it was beautiful.
Dad was a natural. He held Baby close, kept Mom laughing, and made my job easy, which, if you’ve ever tried to coordinate a family portrait session with the 95 degree temps in the summer, you know is no small thing.

We took a break in the nursery to cool off inside after spending time in the morning sun. This is one of my favorite things about lifestyle sessions. They aren’t locked into one setting or one look. We just followed the rhythm of the morning. Baby needed a quiet moment, Mom and Dad needed the air conditioning, and the nursery was waiting with its own soft, beautiful light.
Some of the most tender images from this session came from these few minutes inside. The pace slowed down even further. Everything got a little quieter, a little closer.

I should mention there was a fourth family member who had very strong opinions about being included. Their corgi made sure we knew this was still their house, their baby, and their photo session.
I always look for the little details that make a family who they are. When I noticed the collection of instruments in the house, I asked Dad if he played. Turns out that was an understatement. So naturally, I asked him to grab his mandolin and give us a private concert on the front porch.
I don’t typically list “live acoustic performance” as part of my newborn session packages, but maybe I should. The images from those last few minutes, Mom holding Baby on the porch steps, Dad playing, the morning light streaming in , these were some of my favorites from the entire session. It was one of those unplanned moments that I live for as a photographer. You can’t script this stuff. You just have to be in the moment.

This outdoor summer session is proof that even some of the warmest days can be absolutely stunning for newborn and family portraits, you just have to plan accordingly. Early morning timing, shade from the trees, and a house to retreat into when you need a break make all the difference.
I have a lot more to say about how I approach outdoor sessions in the summer months, so stay tuned. My next post will be a full guide to making the most of warm-weather sessions in Richmond. If you’ve been on the fence about booking during the summer, I think it might change your mind.
In the meantime, if you’re expecting or just welcomed your baby and want to capture this season before it slips away, I would love to connect with you! I take a limited number of newborn sessions each month, and summer spots fill up quickly. Let’s start planning your session.
