Every now and then, a session comes along that perfectly captures why I love this work so much. This was one of those sessions! I had the joy of photographing a bright and fun at-home newborn session for a family with a story as colorful as the session itself. With a background that spans continents—from meeting in Chile to setting up a home here in the States—this family brought a whole lot of warmth and love that made our time together truly special.
Richmond, Virginia At-home Newborn Session Details
Mom and Dad have an incredible story! They met in Chile while Mom was on a trip with the Peace Corps. Dad, who was working as a chef in a local restaurant at the time, captured her heart. Fast forward a few years, and here they are, state-side, welcoming their second child into their lively and loving family.
What made this session so special was how it perfectly captured everything I love about newborn photography. It combined tender connections with spontaneous, toddler-led moments, all wrapped up in a family that’s open, warm, and so willing to share their story with me.
One of my favorite parts of this session was when the family gathered around their breakfast table, just enjoying a snack and each other’s company. Then out of nowhere, Dad started playing the “Bluey” theme song on his guitar. Naomi, their sweet toddler, lit up with excitement, and honestly, I might have been just as thrilled! These little, unplanned moments are pure magic and is what makes these sessions so special.
We also brought in personal touches using a bright rug from Chile which holds so much meaning for this family. It was the perfect backdrop for newborn Sebastian’s portraits as he lay snug in his changing basket. It was a lovely way to honor their roots and bring a piece of their history into their new chapter.
As we moved through their home, we found a quiet moment on the window seat in Naomi’s room. It was a beautiful opportunity to capture the peaceful side of life with a newborn and a toddler. And lastly, to wrap things up, we headed outside to visit their chickens in the backyard—because, why not? It was the perfect way to end a session that was all about embracing the lively spirit of this family.
From the intimate cuddles on the window seat to the playful, music-filled moments around the breakfast table, every part of this bright and fun at-home newborn session felt genuine and full of life.
